It's hard to believe that I started in the real estate business in 1965.  After graduating from Cheshire Academy and obtaining a degree from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee a partner and I formed Sarris & Calcagni here in Cheshire.  Sixteen years later I decided to venture out on my own and created what is now known as Calcagni Associates Real Estate.

My favorite real estate experience so far: Building Calcagni Associates from the ground up has been an amazing and a very rewarding experience for me.  It is humbling to know that the company I started continues to exhibit strong family values and cares deeply for our clients and the people who work here.  I pride myself in knowing that our company can spot changes in the real estate industry, move with them, and stay beyond the cutting edge.

The role new construction has played within our company: In the early 1980's we began to focus our energy on new construction.  I envisioned new construction as a way for us to grow as a company and as an opportunity to provide diversity in our community.  We cultivated relationships with a few select builders and worked hard to find suitable land to develop.  Looking back over the last 25 years, our new construction division has been a win-win not only for Calcagni, but also for the communities where we have built homes for many families.

My role with new construction and land development: As the company continues to grow and change, it is very important to me to work with the builders and contacts that I have developed over the past 42 years.  Since my son has made the brokerage side of the company grow substantially over the past 20 years it has allowed me to concentrate on my first love, which is recognizing opportunities in land development.  It is a process that has always excited me.

Why I enjoy land development so much: Land development is like putting together a giant jigsaw puzzle.  First you sort out the edges so that you have the ability to visualize what the land could be; then you begin to put shapes and colors together by taking into consideration what the town is going to allow; you continue to work from the middle outward till all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and at last the project is finished.  It gives me a great sense of satisfaction to sit back and enjoy what has been created.

My hobbies and interests: Fishing, hunting, golf, friends, family - especially my grandchildren, traveling, and of course the Boston Red Sox!

The motto(s) I live by:

  • I would never ask someone to do something that I wouldn't do myself.
  • I treat everyone who works for me like family.
  • I strongly believe in loyalty.

The personal accomplishment I'm most proud of: I created my own business, watched my son Steve enter the business, survived the trials and tribulations of working with family - all while maintaining a great relationship with him.

My favorite restaurant: How can I pick just one?  I enjoy good food so much, however no restaurant can compare to how wonderful it feels to sit at the dinner table with your children and their children and know everyone is enjoying themselves especially me!

If someone were to ask me if I had always intended on following in my father's footsteps in the real estate business I probably would have said "hell no!" I had already seen the long hours that my father committed to the business. However, since joining the company in 1985 after graduating from Lehigh University, it's now difficult to imagine doing anything else. It's been personally rewarding to take a company that was built by my father and grow it to the next level, and to lead such an extraordinary team of individuals.

Nickname: "Cal" - For generations many of us have shared the same nickname and I'm pleased to say that we finally have an officially named "Cal" in the family - my nephew Cal was born in 2004.

What is your motto? "From those to whom much is given, much is required." (Luke 12:48)

The people who influenced me most and why? Anyone who has ever had the pleasure of meeting my father will know exactly what I mean when I say that he has one of those larger than life personas. Through the years he has taught me so much about business and the importance of relationships. These are lessons that you can't simply learn in school - you must experience them. So to say that he's been a major influence would be an understatement. (At times I think I may even be turning into him!)
I must also credit my mother for inspiring me with words to live by…"Carpe Diem!"

Which living person do you most admire? My wife. Now that I think about it, it's not easy being married to someone so smart, supportive and usually right!

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of? I'm proud of the fact that we have very low turnover within our company. I believe that we have managed to create a supportive environment in which people can make a good living while balancing the most important aspect of all of our lives - our families.

What personal accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? After 20 years, I have found the right balance between my family, work, health and self.

What is your favorite technology device? My Trio 650 (Palm/phone/email device) because it organizes my life!

Favorite restaurant: I eat out for business so much that I could name several restaurants that I enjoy, but when it comes right down to it, my favorite place to eat is home.

Hobbies & Interests: My beloved Red Sox and fishing, fishing, and fishing!!!!

Motto: For every problem there is a solution. With every challenge comes opportunity. I have mastered the art of taking advantage of those opportunities for my clients.

Work Experience:  I've titled this "work experience" but someone told me once that when you find a career you love and enjoy, you will never go to work again. That career is real estate. I've spent the last 25 years counseling and consulting with people on their most prized possession, their home.  Now that I have a management position I'm spending time with the most talented agents around.  Yeah, life is good!

Person who influenced me the most:  Hands down that's my wife Ellen. Her positive and soothing personality has helped me through life's ups and downs. We've been together for over 35 years and I'm looking forward to the next 35!

Favorite Movies:  Forgetaboutit! The Godfather, Goodfellas, Grease & Wall Street.

Favorite Vacation Spot:  I always thought that if the temperature was 80+ degrees and sunny then it would be my favorite spot. However in 1991 that all changed. I visited Italy, the birthplace of my mother - with my wife Ellen and my mom. We discovered so many beautiful and historic places, but I loved Venice most of all because of its tranquility and uniqueness. So, even if it isn't 80 degrees today in Venice, it will forever be my favorite spot.

Favorite Sports Team:  University of Connecticut (UCONN) Men's Basketball Team.  I've followed the team for a long time and I knew that some day they would be a powerhouse. That day is now! With hard work, good recruiting and a great coach, UCONN is the team to beat.  Wow! Sounds a lot like real estate.

Hobbies & Interests:  I'm not a handy kind of guy so I spend my time with my grandchildren. (Three absolutely lovely girls and two handsome boys.)  Having two daughters myself, I thought we would never add a boy to our family, and then along came Christopher, followed by Ryan. What a pleasant adventure it has been having grandsons. I also spend 4 days each week at the gym bodybuilding.  I have to stay in shape to keep up with those little ones!

Friends, Family and Real Estate:  These are the three most important elements of my life.  The order of their importance changes, as the need arises.  All successful career women know how to effectively juggle!

My Family:  I consider myself very fortunate to have wonderful healthy parents, who still live nearby, in the home where I grew up.  They fostered a foundation of stability, which allows me to deal with problems of my own, and others effectively.  My husband and son are my greatest fans who support me and instill a wonderful positive attitude into everything I do.

My Friends:  I have so many wonderful friends.  There are those I have known from childhood, and although our paths have taken us separate ways, we meet regularly for treasured weekends in Boston, New York and Nantucket and on special vacations.  Having lived in Cheshire since 1977, I have made wonderful friends here too.  Together we exercise, ski, play a little bridge, and of course dine out together regularly.

Real Estate:  My career in real estate has guided me throughout most of my adult life.  I chose this career when I was an inner city schoolteacher, in 1977, looking to purchase a home.  I was intrigued by my Realtor's job and decided to get my real estate license.  I secured a job with a company in Cheshire at the beginning of my summer vacation, and planned to go back to teaching in the fall, if the real estate business didn't work out (I always have a contingency plan!).  I resigned from my teaching position in early August and I have never had a regret.  I became an office manager with that company and began selling new homes, an aspect of the business, which I adore.

Calcagni Associates:  By 1982, it became clear to me to be a real success in real estate in Cheshire; Calcagni Associates was the place to be!  Although it was very difficult to leave the comfortable position I had, I made the move to Calcagni in 1984, just before my son's first birthday.  My career flourished as I continued to work and learn more about new construction.  I had no idea of the wonderful comradery I would find at Calcagni.  The support of the principals, management and fellow agents make this company a fabulous place to work.  As the company has grown, so have I, meeting marvelous new challenges in managing our "New Homes Division" and more recently in land development.  The Calcagni environment is unique in its style, all due to the marvelous people who work here, and have become an added group of friends and family.  After 20+ years, I still love to come to work each day, and that says it all.

Work Experience: After obtaining a graduate degree in business, I started my career in the banking industry. I was a Loan Officer in charge of all the Connecticut Public Utilities and also a portfolio of the Bank’s largest corporate customers. After banking, I worked for a public corporation selling real estate limited partnerships and ultimately went into the real estate business.

I have worked for a small commercial broker/ developer, a large Connecticut brokerage company, and for the past 12 years with Calcagni Associates. I have sold everything from a six family house to a 75 million dollar office building, from a half acre parcel of land to a 60 acre subdivision, and managed properties for individuals and Fortune 500 companies.

I have accrued a lot of experience locating and analyzing real estate investments and residential land. Since my start with Calcagni, we have taken several underutilized properties, repositioned them through changes in their use and made them more valuable. We have also successfully worked with numerous land owners to maximize the use and value of their property.
